Happy Independence Day

Hi Everyone,

I was planning to deliver a fireside chat podcast, but forgive me for not doing it today. Yes, it’s the Fourth of July here, and a national holiday, but the reality is that I got sick again. Just feeling low energy at the moment. So let me recover and most likely I will feel much better tomorrow and can do it then.

Meanwhile, I hope everyone is well and, if you are an American, you spent at least a little bit of time reflecting on the American Experiment. There are always problems and shortcomings with that experiment — many, too many, perhaps. But there is an ideal in there, too. A bold idea that:

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

Today, almost 250 years later, these words still mean something. More than that, they retain their power to inspire and lead. Even more surprising, they somehow feel subversive. Don’t they? 

A few months ago, I purchased and hung in my office a print of a 1940 painting of the signing of the U.S. Constitution. I have it framed and it looks good where it is. I feel that in today’s world, that too is subversive. It’s as though when you see the dream die, you realize just how precious it is. So I believe in preserving it. 

I’ll be back tomorrow. Time for Epsom Salt, chamomile, and bed. 🙂

    Thank you, America, for the sacrifice in tearing down the shackles of colonialism and pathing the way for the other colonies in doing so. Thank you, England, for instilling fantastic values and culture that still resonate today. Together, something extraordinary was spawned from something not so great but needs to be critiqued in context and not given a post-modern spin. Please.

    Hope you feel better Richard! I always look forward to reading your words of wisdom, listening to your podcasts and audiobooks, and watching and learning from your videos. My favorite of course, are the weekly fireside chats on video. .

    Did you get the covid shot? Everyone, literally EVERYONE I know that has gotten the horrific shot has gotten really really sick at least twice afterward!! Insanity.

    Richard,

    Every year i hope to find a group of like minded free thinkers to celebrate Independence Day with. To me your work sums up my feelings on my pursuit of independence. Would you ever organize a conference on Independence Day?
