We are in the process of making significant (and very positive) changes to the site this weekend.
All of this is designed to improve your experience as a user, from ease of signing up, canceling your membership, and everything in-between. Overall, you will be able to control your membership much better.
As we’ve mentioned before, the main addition will be to have a forum for everyone. This will definitely happen, but what we discovered is that for reasons we have yet unknown, the site is using an unusual amount of resources to operate. Much more than it should.
Our web expert, Evelyn, discovered that our site is subject to an unusually high level of “bot” activity. A bot is an application that performs an automated task. As I learned from CNET, “Bots are everywhere in technology, ranging from malicious bots that come with a virus to search engine spiders that crawl the Internet looking for new Web pages to add.”
Okay, that’s great, except we are being flooded with them. Evelyn is working on it, trying to understand why. We will get to the bottom of this. It’s important because if we want a viable Forum, we need to reduce our resource consumption, and it seems like dealing with the bots is the best place to start. We are also checking all the plug-ins that are in the site and testing to see which ones may be causing problems.
For that reason, we are just giving you a heads-up that there may be a glitch in the matrix, so to speak, and if there is one, it won’t last for more than a day or two. It will probably not affect any current members. But we may prohibit new sign-ups for a day or two while we figure this out.
And, I should mention for those members who like to use our awesome Chatroom, it’s possible, though not definite, that it may not be available for brief periods during this time. Everything is being tested.
But it’s all good news. The bottom line is that good changes are coming. We will keep you posted!
